The Galápagos Islands face escalating threats from climate change and marine pollution, putting biodiversity and local livelihoods at risk. Despite the islands & UNESCO World Heritage status, plastic pollution, unsustainable practices, and limited access to climate education are holding back effective community action — leaving residents, especially youth, with few opportunities to engage in practical climate action, ocean literacy, and local conservation.
Frente Insular (FIRMAG) will establish a centralized, community-driven space to empower citizens in climate action. This ‘Community Activation Centre’ will be located in Santa Cruz Island and will be a dedicated hub for environmental education, workshops, exhibitions, storytelling, and create a space to encourage dialogue on climate resilience and marine stewardship. Building on FIRMAG & existing community initiatives - the “Galápagos Mi Responsabilidad” radio project, coastal clean-ups, and “El Mar Nos Conecta” kayak outings - the project brings communication, education, hands-on conservation, and youth leadership together in a shared community space.
To establish a Community Activation Centre that brings climate education, citizen participation, marine pollution action and youth leadership together in one accessible local platform, contributing to a climate resilient and engaged Galápagos community.
FIRMAG was founded in 2017 in response to the seizure of an illegal fishing vessel carrying protected species within the Galápagos Marine Reserve. Since then, FIRMAG has led 1 700 community activities, reaching over 5 000 community members, and played a key role in the 2022 declaration of the Hermandad Marine Reserve.
